When people picture depression they imagine visible sadness. In the clinic we more often see the quieter signs:
1. Losing interest in things you used to enjoy. 2. Irritability and a short fuse — especially in men. 3. Sleeping much more, or waking at 3–4 am unable to return to sleep. 4. Appetite and weight changes in either direction. 5. Brain fog: slow thinking, poor memory, difficulty deciding. 6. Physical aches with no clear medical cause. 7. Feeling numb — not sad, just switched off.
Two weeks or more of several of these signs is the clinical threshold to get assessed. Depression is highly treatable with psychotherapy, medication or both, and treatment is tailored — there is no one-size-fits-all.
